Is Jeremy Lin for real?

Jeremy Lin is for real.

Beyond having a sound mastery of the fundamentals, Lin has demonstrated an above average understanding of NBA basketball. He is consistently paying attention to details of the game that combine basketball IQ with hustle.

He has shown superior court vision when double-teamed. This is the first weapon opposing coaches will use to rattle young point guards. Often inexperienced point guards will get rattled by the attention of an extra defender and make panicked passes that result in turnovers. Lin has shown a savvy ability to find the open man out of the double team. This type of court savvy will continue to earn him the trust of his coaches and continued minutes.

Lin is also an excellent perimeter help defender. Another factor that limits the playing time and potential of young point guards is their inability to play team defense. Lin has proven that he can provide immediate and effective pressure on opposing ball handlers. This pressure results in steals and easy fast break buckets for his teammates. Players go into offensive slumps, but the players who can provide value on both ends of the court tend to have longevity in the league.

The final piece of evidence that indicates legitimate talent is Lin’s multi-dimensional game. His success has not been the result of a single gimmick. He is not on a hot streak of only hitting three pointers. His success hasn’t come from scoring alone. Lin has demonstrated an all around game that includes scoring, assisting and defensive help. Players who can impact the game in many areas will continue to win the favor of their coaches. This will result in continued playing time and increasing confidence of playing at the NBA level.

What we’ve seen thus far from Jeremy Lin is not a mirage. The dude can flat out play.
